An experimental dance film installation that explores where dancer LUCIA JOYCE, daughter of the Irish writer James Joyce, appears in her father’s book of the dark FINNEGANS WAKE.

‘Somewhere in the Body’ is an experimental dance film installation by Áine Stapleton, centred on Lucia Joyce - a talented dancer and daughter of the famous Irish writer James Joyce. The production examines how Lucia, and her dance career, influenced the creation of her father's iconic tale of Finnegans Wake, in which she can be seen to appear in various guises.

The theme of light runs through this work as it did throughout Lucia’s life; her name, taken from Saint Lucia the patron saint of the blind, is described as meaning 'light giver'.

The film showcases dance artists Colin Dunne and Katie Vickers delivering exquisite, nuanced performances, with choreography developed from texts related to Lucia's characters in the book. These performances are combined with original light sculptures by German artist Patrick Kramer, inspired by colour references in Finnegans Wake. These sculptures are also exhibited alongside the installation. Together with a unique soundscape based on Finnegans Wake, narrated by Joycean Scholar Finn Fordham, these collective elements reveal the psychic spaces inhabited by Lucia and her father.

'Somewhere in the Body' is presented at a temporary exhibition space, 'Château Hornegg au Lac', in Seefeld, Zurich, which is located in close proximity to several homes where the Joyce family resided in the early 1900s. This presentation of 'Somewhere in the Body' is supported by Culture Ireland and The Irish Embassy in Switzerland, and is curated by Kunsthaus Aussersihl, 6 1/2, and LOKAL 14, who are overseeing the curation of the space for a limited time.
